Best Practices

Objectives:

  1. To cultivate leadership skills by offering opportunities for students to develop leadership qualities and abilities. 

  2. To improve employability by developing student's skills and talent in areas that are in high demand in job market.

  3. To foster creativity and innovation by encouraging students to explore and develop their creative and innovative abilities.

  4. To Increase overall student engagement and satisfaction by creating a supportive and stimulating environment that encourages active participation and personal growth

Context:

  1. Skills and talent are driving forces of social development and economic growth of the country. 

  2. To acquire extra knowledge over and above the regular course of study is very important for learner of any institute. 

  3. All students need to work further to enhance their talent to be able to excel in their field. 

  4. In this process of enhancement, the students also need to work on personality development. 

  5. Hence, TKDC initiated ‘Skill and Talent Cultivation Program for students’

Practice:

TKDC initiated ‘Skill and Talent Cultivation Program for students’. Survey was conducted before developing the program to understand which skills are lacking in students & what can be done to enhance knowledge and skills. Feedback of program has also been taken to improvise the program. Apart from routine academic work, TKDC has conducted following activities-
 

A. Skills Cultivation:

  1. Program includes simulation based training and structured programs for training and assessment of students in Clinical Skills Lab/ Simulation Based Learning. Around 120 post graduate students from 4 post-graduate departments are benefitted in last 5 years. Total 18 programs in prosthodontics, 10 program in conservative dentistry were carried out each year which benefitted 299 students of II year BDS in last 5 years. 4 CPR training programs were carried out by Oral surgery department which benefitted 67 interns in 5 years.

  2. Seminar presentation was made an integral part of academic learning by the students. All departments were asked to make students present the seminars. Around, 300 final year students presented over 1200 seminars in total 4 subjects in last 5 years which helped to improve analytical skills. Postgraduate students presented 185 seminars in year 2021-22, 236 in 2020-21, 172 in 2019-20, 132 in 2018-19 and 251 in 2017-18.

  3. 12 visits to satellite centers by each intern helped them to learn human values, communication skills, and professionalism.

  4. Courses for soft skill development, stress management, practice management were also conducted.

B. Handholding for capacity building

  1. From 2019, mentors from teaching staff are assigned to groups of 10 students to assess the progress of students, to motivate them & guide them personally.

Hand Holding mechanism for better learning experience was developed in 2019 in the form of structured program like “Slow Performers and Advance Learners”. Learning levels of the students were assessed considering performance in previous year university exam and 1st internal exam of present year. Depending on learning levels, students are divided into Slow Performers and Advance Learners. Various interventions for Slow Performers and Advance Learners includes remedial classes, re-tests, peer teaching, chalk & talk methods as mentioned in policy.

C. Inculcate all-round development

  1. TKDC arranged essay, rangoli, poster competitions on 17 special day celebrations in which around 400 students participated in last 5 years.

  2. Around 800 students participated in cultural week to present their talent in 14 different fields other than academics. During sports week, 6 in-door, 9 out-door competitions were organized in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20.

  3. ​223 extension activities in last five years enhanced personal and professional growth. Around 660 students from III, IV BDS and intern batch were involved in these activities in last 5 years

D. Imparting and strengthening employability component: 

  1. Career counseling lectures were conducted in year 2020-21, 2021-22 to guide students about competitive exams, career opportunities and private clinical practice. Total 402 students attended the lectures.

  2. For 4 intern batches, competitive exam training program was conducted by teaching staff from each department which was attended by total 171 students.

E. Fostering creative and innovative competencies: 

  1. 217 posters in 12 subjects related to academics are made by the undergraduate students under guidance of faculty to nurture the creativity.

  2. 63 three dimensional models are made by undergraduate students in last 5 years which was used as learning tool for students. 
     

F. Cultivating leadership aspects

  1. Under the student council activities, students are encouraged to participate in organization of celebration of festivals and annual social gatherings. 3 annual social gatherings were organized in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 in which around 700 students actively participated in organization.

Evidence of Success:

 

  1. In university exams, slow performers did well, whereas advanced learners performed admirably and earned high rankings.

  2. According to feedback analysis of 264 students, clinical skills in 89.50% students and soft skills in 84.60% students improved by this program. Stress management skills in 76.80% students was improved.

   4. TKDC students were motivated to participate in Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Program held by Ministry of drinking water and sanitation in year 2018, for which they were awarded with 2nd prize at national level.

   5. 700 students actively participated in organization of events and festivals in year 2017, 2018 and 2019 which enhanced their teamwork, leadership qualities and abilities. According to feedback analysis 92.70% students thought that this helped them in talent enhancement.

  1. Anticipation in feedback.

  2. Continuous supply of funding to plan and execute programs.

  3. Excessive work load on teaching staff other than academic work

  4. Cooperation from non – teaching staff for arrangements.

  5. Motivation of students for participation.
